WTF: Belated post – “A lay a day…”

By

Arghhhhh.  Angry Blez.  Angry, angry Blez.

Regular followers may have noticed that it was rather unusual for me to go an entire week without posting something on the site – particularly on a weekend where there was a full coupon of action.

Well there is a good reason for that.  I DID post an update to the site.  At around 12 noon on Saturday.  Using my WordPress iPhone app.

Which, for want of a better word, is crap.

I don’t like to be slagging off WordPress.  It is a marvellous piece of software, and without it I may never even have created BOTW.  So for that I am very grateful, particularly given that, unlike Uncle Steve and Father Bill, I am not charged for the privilege of using it.

But in the last twelve months I written and “posted”  around 10 articles using their iPhone application.  And, at last count, seven of them have disappeared into the ether to never be seen again (even in draft form) once I press the magic “publish” button.

Which as a writer, trying to find the time to publish free content and maintain a P&L whilst living a normal life is very, very annoying.

I actually spent my weekend at the James Andrews Golf School down near Hastings, which I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a chance to work on their golf game, irrespective of standard.

However, I took 30 minutes out from my course late on Saturday morning and settled down in the bar to do a quick weekend post for BOTW.

It was a quick and simple one for me as I had been waiting to post a bet I had made personally early in the week.

I didn’t have too much from the coupon – in fact my only additional match bet I had highlighted was Bury to beat Crewe at Gigg Lane at a massive 2.05.

However, for obvious reasons I was struggling with my moral conscience as to whether or not to even broach the subject of backing against the Railwaymen.

My selection for the week was backing West Ham United to stay up this season – with a very small tinkle on them to beat Liverpool at Upton Park on Sunday.

This was one of my favourite selections of the season and ticked all the boxes:

  • Massively undervalued home side due to regress.
  • Massively overvalued away side due to regress.
  • Perceived out of form home side.  Perceived  in-from away side.
  • Avram Grant, the man who shouldn’t even be a manager in the media’s eyes.
  • King Kenny, the all singing, all dancing, Boyzone loving saviour of football.
  • Scott Parker.
  • Almost 3/1 on a home side.

It was a sitting duck of value, with a huge +EV margin in the home price.

And due to a shoddy iPhone app, you all missed it.  And then sods law it only goes and comes in as well!

In a month where I had had a couple of losing bets as well.

If waking up with blisters and a very stiff back wasn’t enough to put me in a bad mood on a Monday morning, to then discover none of this was nowhere to be found certainly did.

I can’t be bothered to retype all of the additional points I made about West Ham’s performances, recent results and squad that I typed on Saturday now after the event.

In summary, they have a top 8 strike force and a third quartile midfield.  And a good manager.

I still think 11/10 on them to stay up is a cracking price so take it if you fancy a piece – you can get that laying West Ham on the exchanges at circa 1.9.

I may post something mid week if I calm down.  But for now I am off for a sulk.

Adios amigos.

BOTW: 3pt exposure lay of West Ham to go down at 1.6

Yes, spotted the West Ham/Liverpool as a value bet (Liverpool fan though I am). Hesitated at 4.2 and only got 3.8 in the end, then laid at h/t as insurance (which cost me nothing much). Extra point to mention was that Liverpool also had a European tie mid-week which, in my experience, nearly always guarantees a sub-par performance at the weekend.

      Chris,

Glad to see some of my readers profited from this one despite the technical cock up.

I got on personally at 3.9 – anywhere in the region was a cracking price.

Totally agree on the European games – as was evidenced at COMS as well.

Anyone else on West Ham as well? Maybe the thought process has transferred over to long term readers effectively now…

    Hi Blez,

I opted for over 3.5 goals @4.20, left me biting my nails until the late Carlton Cole went in, phew! I know it shouldn’t matter too much when the goals are scored to land a bet but a late goal always initially seems to make a win that little bit sweeter and a loss that little bit harder to take.

Fulham to draw on the road paid dividends once again, 21.0 for the H/D option in the HT/FT market rounded the weekend off nicely. Would have been even better had I listened to a pal of mine who made a good case for the Birmingham
win @8.0, I wasn’t convinced enough to put my hard earned down but fair play to him for landing a nice touch.

Tiger Woods on my sons xbox is the nearest I get to a round of golf nowadays, kudos for getting down and dirty with the real thing!

    cheers

unlucky with this one blez, sorry to hear about this. couldn’t sniff anthing out this weekend so stayed clear. had a small windfall on the tables on friday night, taking candy from some boozed up idiots. Very happy to make the calls especially when I have raised with a premium hand and some prat has been at the table for one or two hands then makes an unprecendeted huge re-raise. cheers for the wonga.

any value in stoke tonight? stripping out the top 5 they are 6/2/2 +5 at home, so a 60% shot. Best priced at 10/11 making them 52%. That’s not factoring in West Brom away who are 2/2/9 -16.

Thoughts welcome over the next couple of hours or so before I jump on.

More importantly what was golf school like? me and my mates been trying to find a decnet one for ages!

  5. Blez says:

    Geoff,

I think it is very impressive. However, you will be looking at Next January or February before you would get the great value deal we just got.

That said, I think it is worth the money even at full price.

I have been there with friends off handicaps of 28, and this week was with a friend who plays off 8, and both enjoyed it greatly and got a lot out of it.

If you’d like to know a bit more, drop me an email on the usual address!

    Cheers

  6. Blez says:

    Cockers,

I would say Stoke are indeed good
value tonight on a standalone basis… But I am far too exposed to West Brom to get involved myself at the moment!
    :D

  7. Cockers says:

agreed tough time, late goals are sometimes hard to swallow. only had a small exposure to stoke.

does anyone else think that united are probably not a 26% implied chance for this game, which can be taken now? a terrible record at the bridge, but i do think that with these teams playing how they are there is some fat in this. i know it’s an away shout but 3.8 is generous i think. thoughts?
